Walk the edge of a field and it looks healthy. Fly over it and the truth is more complicated: a dry corner, a patch under pest pressure, a strip where the planter skipped. These differences decide the season's yield, and most of them are invisible from ground level until it is too late to respond.
Seeing what the eye cannot
Healthy vegetation reflects near-infrared light strongly and absorbs red light for photosynthesis. Satellites measure both, and the ratio between them — vegetation indices like NDVI — turns into a map of plant vigour across every part of a field. Stress shows up in the data days or weeks before it is visible to a person standing in the crop.
The field is never uniform. The only question is whether you can see the variation in time to act on it.
From a map to a decision
A vigour map on its own is interesting; a prioritised alert is useful. The job is to translate the imagery into action: scout this zone for pests, check irrigation in that corner, adjust the nitrogen plan here. Tracked across the season, the same fields tell a story of how the crop is tracking against its potential.
Scale is the point
One field can be walked. A thousand hectares across multiple regions cannot. Satellite monitoring gives an agronomist the same continuous view of an entire operation that they would otherwise have of a single plot — and directs scarce attention to the acres that need it most.
Coarse, frequent imagery is ideal here: revisit matters more than fine detail when you are watching growth unfold week to week. The result is earlier intervention, more targeted inputs, and a clearer read on yield well before harvest.
